Recently back from Uganda, DHW employee Aimee Shipman discusses her work on HIV

The level of expertise and knowledge among Health and Welfare staff is extremely high, and a blog post for the National Alliance of State & Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) takes notice of that expertise in one DHW program manager.

Treasure Valley ground squirrel tests positive for plague

A ground squirrel (whistle pig) found south of Boise has tested positive for plague. Idaho public health officials and Idaho Fish and Game are asking people to take precautions as outdoor summer activities shift into high gear over the long Memorial Day weekend.

State Hospital South to honor patients buried in cemetery at memorial on Friday

State Hospital South in Blackfoot is hosting a memorial program at 10 a.m. Friday, May 22nd, to honor patients who have been buried in the hospital’s cemetery, some as long ago as the 1890s.  The hospital has been placing headstones on each grave as it has raised the money to do so.

House Bill 1 is headed for the joint committee; use the resources below to follow along

House Bill 1 will be introduced shortly in the joint House Judiciary, Rules & Administration Committee and the Senate Judiciary & Rules Committee in the Lincoln Auditorium. Department of Health and Welfare Director Richard Armstrong will introduce the legislation and then the joint committees will hear public testimony.

Here’s the schedule for Monday’s special session of the Idaho Legislature

The Idaho Legislature will convene in special session on Monday, May 18, to consider RS23967, a bill that adopts uniform language to align Idaho with all other states and approved foreign countries for the collection of child support.

The resolution will be introduced for a print hearing in the House Ways and Means Committee at about 9 a.m. in room C310 of the Idaho Capitol. If the committee votes to print the bill, Department of Health and Welfare Director Richard Armstrong will provide a formal presentation explaining the legislation at about 9:30 a.m.  in a joint meeting of the Senate Judiciary and Rules  Committee and the House Judiciary, Rules and Administration Committee.  Continue reading “Here’s the schedule for Monday’s special session of the Idaho Legislature”

DHW Director: Child support bill is about personal responsibility and accountability

Idaho’s special legislative session to address child support is Monday.  For all of us, it is critical that we uphold the values that make Idaho great. At the top of that list is personal responsibility.
